James' favorite game is Peek-a-boo. If he is anywhere near a book or a blanket, he will pull it over his eyes until you say, 'Where's James?" And then he'll remove it and you shout "PEEK-A-BOO!" (in case you live under a rock and did not know how Peek-a-boo worked) and he cackles and cackles and cackles.
His cackle is super handy. We have started doing some baby signs with him, mostly "more?" and "All Done!" since those were the ones Nathan used the most, and he already understands them. I'll say, "Do you want more? Or are you all done?" and I'll know his answer based on which one he cackles the most at. He is still mostly eating purees although he loves to gnaw on a piece of bagel and is very intrigued by cheerios. He will pick them up but getting them into his mouth is hit or miss.
He is a total little sidewinder, and that is weird for me, having a baby so young who does not stay put. He will roll and twist all the way around the room in no time. But he is not squirmy at all when you hold him and is a total snuggler. Yesterday a friend was holding him and pointed to another friend's baby, who is six weeks younger and just as mellow and happy as James, and said, "These are the two best babies I've ever seen." I was all, "I KNOW!" Someone pointed out I was biased but you know, I never did say that about Nathan.
****
But oh, Nathan is fun now. His favorite game these days is Hide and Seek although he's very unclear on the concept. When he hides he'll hide in the same place each time and either come running to you the second you are done counting or stay put and shout where he is. "I'm hiding under the chair! Here I am!!" When you hide he gets distressed if he can't find you even when you are hiding somewhere like behind the couch and so you have to pretend to be talking to Buster about how you hope Nathan can't find you here, behind the couch, and then he thinks he's so clever for overhearing and finding you.
His favorite book these days is
Cars and Trucks and Things that Go and man alive, I am so sick of that pig family. Why does it take them 40 pages to get to the beach and then only five to get home, is what I want to know. And where do they live that they go to the beach and then get home by driving through snow covered mountains? Nathan loves it and my favorite thing is that when the book asks "would you like a bananamobile?" he used to say yes but lately he starts shaking his head even before you ask, and then says, "No, I no want a bananamobile. I have a bananamobile when I am six." Okay then.
He also loves, loves, loves to hear stories about when I was a little girl, and about Grammy and Grandpa. For my brother's birthday I told Uncle Daniel stories all day and those were a hit although I fear it gave him some ideas since my most vivid memories of Daniel as a small child were not all of him being well behaved and non-destructive. Yesterday he was eating a piece of bread and asked me about the crust ("What is this, Mommy? Is this like skin?") and I told him it was the crust, and then I said, "When I was little Grandpa used to tell me if I ate the crust it would make my hair curly." "Again, Mommy? Tell me story about Gee-ca (Grandpa) and crust and you hair curly again?" It was not really a story but he had to hear it about fortytwo times.
He and James continue to love each other to pieces and now Nathan will imitate James' noises and James will yell back and I did not know how much I would love seeing two little boys going "Aaaaaaaah!" back and forth at the lunch table.
